Since Alfred Hitchcock turned his lens on Mission San Juan Bautista in his famous film Vertigo, many others have followed suit. Now, at the Steinbeck Center, you can check out three California photographers’ shots of the historic mission, the largest in the state. The exhibit runs through April 7. The photos capture in magnificent beauty scenes from within the hard adobe walls and solitary rooms of a mission that has continuously held masses since its founding in 1797. Though the pictures are a snapshot in time, the mission is replete in history, from church tiles that contain animal prints to a collection of books and art that are in some cases older than the mission itself. The photographers will be at the Steinbeck Center in February to speak about their work and experiences with the project. [AT]
