Smuin Ballet at Sunset Center

Smuin ballet's winter program features Adam Hougland's "Cold Virtues" set to the music of Phillip Glass' Violin Concerto No 1, Trey McIntyre's "Oh Inverted World" choreographed to the Shins song of the same name, and three works from Michael Smuin: "Starshadows" a romantic composition to Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, "Homeless," danced to Paul Simon's Graceland, and en pointe solo "No Vivire" featuring the Gypsy Kings. Hougland's Vitures uses dance as a blunt and visceral kind of gestural language, with costumes that evoke the gritty, smoky and theatrical, while McIntyre's Inverted World utilizes the music's pop factor, literally creating action packed bursts from the songs punchy drums. Dancers perform as perfectly as can be imagined, in a volatile selection of dynamic and postmodern dance that makes one reconsider the insight in a music video and celebrate dance instead. [JB]
