The works of three greater L.A. Area artists, Urban Sights/Sites begins with drawing and painting urban observations, but as Andrew Dickson, Yu Ji and Jonathan Puls leave the street to return to the easel, the artists' differing perspectives shed varied light on the study sites of freeway overpasses, crosswalks and mergers between pedestrian life and city construction. Each scene layers communal history with imperious reinvention. Visions of decay and renewal depict economic, political and humanistic rivalry, vying for a narrative in the sense of place. The longevity of which, in the rehashed infrastructure, changes from one artist to another. Pieces range from juxtapositions of urban and natural elements as seen by a landscape painter, places composed of sketchbook drawn faces and spaces that posit relationships between people and their urban surroundings, and urban sites as expressions of art history.
