Moss Landing Marine Labs faculty member Dr. Erika McPhee-Shaw will talk about the intersections between ocean exploration, world politics and socioeconomics. Ocean science does not occur in a vacuum; from the day the HMS Challenger set out on the first ocean research expedition in the 1800's, marine discovery has been driven by warfare, trade and other powerful, global forces. In her lecture Dr. McPhee-Shaw will discuss a variety of surprising examples of this phenomenon, and touch on the resultant breakthroughs for ocean science. Dr. McPhee-Shaw is a professor of Physical Oceanography at MLML. She was also recently elected Chair of the Central and Northern California Ocean Observing System Executive Committee. Her lecture is based on a graduate seminar she offers at MLML. [DLG].
7pm Thu Feb. 28. Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, 8272 Moss Landing Road, Moss Landing. Free/Friends of MLML, $8 donation recommended/non-Friends of MLML. 771-4464.
