A wonderful portrait is indeed a work of art, and we're not talking about high school yearbook pics here. Think Rembrandt, Renoir, Picasso. Susan Jaques, an art and travel journalist, will be giving a talk at the Monterey Museum of Art La Miranda called "About Face: Colonial to Contemporary Portraiture." The history winds through early American art, touches on the evolution of portraiture in Europe, and ends with the reemergence of portraiture in works by Andy Warhol, and others. The talk complements the Museum's current exhibition, Chuck Close: Works on Paper 1975-2012, which is a presentation of more than seventy large-scale portraits. Jaques will also be signing copies of her new book "A Love for the Beautiful: Discovering America's Hidden Art Museums."
10:30am. 720 Via Mirada, Monterey. Free for Friends of the Museum members; $10 MMA Members; $15 non-members. 372-5477 x101. www.montereyart.org.
