It is the middle of the gray whale migration, and Monterey locals are planning to celebrate. Whalefest is a weekend-long, family friendly event that offers a myriad of opportunities to learn about whales, Monterey Bay and Fisherman's Wharf while supporting local marine conservation nonprofits. Whale-watching excursions and tours of the harbor by Maritime Historian Tim Thomas will occur throughout the weekend, and the Wharf Theater will be showing a variety of ocean-related documentaries, including "Ocean Frontiers," which debuted in Monterey this fall. Art exhibits and hands-on demonstrations - including squid dissections organized by the "King of the Humbolt Squid" Bill Gilly - will delight kids and adults alike. Live music (by The Whales, Nick Fettis and the Community Children's Choir), chalk art, beach clean-ups and remote-controlled sailing competitions are also guaranteed. [DLG]
