This season at the Monterey Symphony is all about celebrating the mightiest instrument of a string orchestra, the piano. But with each concert dedicated to a different vibe—the theme of this program is "introspection"—the piano, and all-strings orchestra takes on a gentler, and, well, more introspective sound. Pianist Ana Petrova, who's been praised by critics for her ultra-smooth style, is the soloist on Mozart’s Concerto for Piano No. 13 in C Major. The symphony also plays Dvorjak's Serenade in E and two Spanish vignettes, Eduard Toldrá’s Vistes al Mar and Joaquín Turina’s La Oración del Torero, or the bullfighter's prayer. That thoughtful calm before the storm is exactly the space this music dwells in. [SR]
