The kind of ambient rock that lends itself to concerts, Former Friends of Young Americans' 2012 debut work is a throwback to concept albums meant to be listened to as a whole, like those made popular by Pink Floyd. With a Sigur Ros-like seamlessness and a more pop-infused approachable sound, the Former Friends overlay light industrial noises with languorous, richly developed melodies track after track. The amorphous sound could be a more lively take on a Lost in Translation soundtrack: some crooning and ambient tones build on the kind of optimistic rock best suited for silent journeys, dark rooms and neon light. The band's soundscape approach is a good performance for some mental scrubbing in the new year. [JB]
