For people road-tripping to the breathtaking Big Sur Coast, Highway 1 is the gateway from the north. But in a much deeper ecological sense, the true feature linking the Monterey Peninsula to Big Sur is the western region of Carmel River Valley. Remarkably, the gorgeous area encompassing Palo Corona Regional Park and the Whisler-Wilson Ranch—both preserved by Big Sur Land Trust and sold to the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District. At this free talk, “Preserving the Carmel River & the Gateway to Big Sur: History, Victories, Heroes, and Challenges for the Future,” Stanford University biology professor and Big Sur Land Trust board chair George Somero talks about the history and the future of this region, including the land trust’s ongoing efforts to restore riparian habitat, educate the public and improve access to Big Sur country. 7pm. Sunset Center, Carpenter Hall, 9th & Mission, Carmel. Free. 624-1615.
