The Metropolitan Opera returns this season with their award-winning and highly popular opera series, broadcast live via high-definition satellite—with additional footage of interviews with principals and other special insights—to movie screens across the world. Of the 1,900 screens in 63 countries, we get two screens—one in Salinas and one in Monterey. The run follows: Bartlett Sher's new production of Gaetano Donizetti's delightful comedy L'Elisir d'Amore ("The Elixir of Love") Oct. 13; Guiseppe Verdi's powerful Othello starring Johan Botha and Renee Fleming Oct. 27; Thomas Ades conducting his own retelling of Shakespeare's The Tempest Nov. 10; a revival of Mozart's ancient Roman tale of La Clemenza di Tito on Dec. 1; Verdi's beloved Un Ballo in Maschera, done with "dreamlike" touches by David Alden, Dec. 8; Verdi's monumental Egyptian opera AIDA on Dec. 15; Berlioz's epic Les Troyens, done with "large-scale musical forces" on Jan. 5; the second opera in Donizetti's Tudor trilogy, Maria Stuarda, sung by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato on Jan. 19; Verdi's tragic and aching Rigoletto, set in 1960s Las Vegas, on Feb. 16; Wagner's mighty and sublime final work, Parsifal, March 2; Zandonai's Francesca da Rimini, inspired by Dante's Inferno on March 16; and a new production of Handel's Giulio Cesare to close out the season on April 27. Opera lovers are in for a feast. [WR]
