The World Affairs Council truly makes the world smaller, more intimate and more understandable by bringing esteemed and learned lecturers from different policy areas to discuss global issues. They do so with smartly programmed luncheon series (there's a fee for lunch, none for the lecture) and also with this annual series discussion, Great Decisions. It's a more open-ended, eight-session, weekly Monday discussion lead by WACMB president Peter Powles, who uses as a sort-of syllabus the Foreign Policy Association's 2013 Briefing Book, written by policy experts on the topics to be discussed at the 100 or so WACs across the country. Those topics, running the months of February and March, are "Future of the Euro" on Feb. 4, "Egypt" on Feb. 11 (the last WACMB discussion on Egypt, at Rancho Canada, drew 180 people, fyi), "NATO" on Feb. 18, "Myanmar" on Feb. 25, "Humanitarian Intervention" on March 4, "Iran" on March 11, "China in Africa" on March 18, "Threat Assessment" on March 25. Buy the book at the sessions ($20, while supplies last) or at the website for the Foreign Policy Association website (www.fpa.org) and join the impartial, non-partisan discussions on these timely and deeply relevant issues, or don't buy the book and just listen and learn. Unannounced policy experts tend to show up for these things. [WR]
