In 1848 William Brainard Post stepped off a ship in Monterey and the rest is history. It's a long, convoluted, and fascinating history that Soaring Starkey explains in her lecture "The Post Ranch Family: One of Central California’s First Homesteaders." Starkey is the Post Ranch Inn historian and have lived in Big Sur for several decades. She has a close connection to Post family and knew Billy, the great-great grandson, of W.B. Post who came from Connecticut to make a name for himself on the West Coast. Starkey has spent years gathering stories, photographs, and intimate details of what made the Post family succeed in the 1800's and how they laid the groundwork for creating one of the most spectacular hotel resorts in the world in Big Sur.
