Classical music might not generally evoke thoughts Paul Revere, but this concert, themed "Revolution," might get listeners tapping their toes like a horse ready for battle. The program begins with Joaquín Rodrigo's 1929 Three Old Dance Airs, a nostalgic work for courtly music of a bygone era, then goes back in time to early-Romantic masters who pushed musical form. Schubert's Symphony No. 3 pays homage to Haydn and Mozart, but leaves behind some of their Classical conventions. Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 is a rare showcase of Beethoven's own pianistic talents, a technically demanding work of bravado. Acclaimed pianist Jean Louis Steuerman takes the keyboard by storm in the symphony's piano-oriented season, here exploring the bridges and disruptions between musical eras. [SR]
