A Day Without A Mexican

A terrific premise is mangled to a pulp, then beaten to death in this forced mockumentary by director Sergio Arau (son of Alfonso Arau, who made the delightful Like Water for Chocolate ). One sunny morning, the state of California wakes up to discover that a third of its population—the ignored third that provides essential services, entertainers, businessmen and a huge bank of consumers—has vanished. Arau doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry, so he equivocates, lurching between heavy-footed satire about white California’s assumptions that all Latinos are Mexicans—and misbegotten tragic social realism centered around a small group of white and Latino characters who must deal with the fallout. It falls to the lone remaining Hispanic, a reporter played by Yareli Arizmendi (who played the lead in Like Water for Chocolate ) to articulate the movie’s overworked message.
