A Love Divided

The "love Divided" That The Title So Sappily Refers To Is The One Between Sean And Sheila Cloney (liam Cunningham And Orla Brady), A Real-life Married Couple In 1957 Ireland Whose Disagreement Over The Schooling Of Their Child Fractured A Community. A Small War Erupts When Sheila Runs Away With Her Children Rather Than Allow The Local Catholic Authorities To Dictate How She Should ParentÑan Action That Inspired A Disastrous Catholic Boycott Of All Things Protestant. It's A Fascinating Story Of The Extreme Measures Sheila Went To In Order To Challenge The Single-minded Authority Of The Church. But The Film Is Undone By An Unwillingness To Make Its Characters Complex, To Unromanticize Its Heroes (and Sheila Cloney Was Indeed One). But In Order To Be A Hero, One Needn't Be Inhuman. The Crusader Would Have Been Just As Heroic Without The Filmmakers' Application Of A Glossy Top Coat, Sure To Fend Off Any Imperfections. Reviewed by Kj.
