All the splatter-gore and horror-porn that's glutted screens and trawled for cheap thrills gets silently flushed down the drain from whence it came, thanks to this low-budget debut from director/writer Oren Peli. Paranormal Activity feels like a revelation in the scary movie world, but is really a return to the top form of classics like The Exorcist and The Omen, with a wise nod to Hitchcock, and a savvy dash of Blair Witch Project cinema verite. The film is creeping across the country's theaters, the same way it creeps up the nerves of audiences, delivering its package of fear in a fresh, patient, dreadful manner. Reviewed by WR.
