The montage beginning Malcolm X is the best he's ever done: an American flag fills the frame, and the voice of Malcolm X fills the soundtrack, excoriating white Americans for their crimes. Intercut is a slowed down loop of the Rodney King beating, and as that nightmare recurs again and again the flag bursts into flames and burns down to a black "X." It's Lee at his best, and the life of Malcolm X in essence; injustice, oratory, and rage ignite into a purging flame leaving behind a new identity, an unknown quantity.
