The designation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary this month has significance beyond the protection provided to the waters touching our local shores. It will change the way we view and interact with a rouse we have taken for granted for centuries--a bay that has been relied upon alternately as a livelihood, a rich and engaging research site, and a vacation spot of unparalleled beauty.
