The Story Behind Scripps' Purchase of the Herald

The EW Scripps Company of Cincinnati is the new owner of the Monterey County Herald. But it's an acquisition with a tempestuous prologue, settled in the aftermath of a six-month long labor shutdown at Scripps' Pittsburgh Press. The dispute ended only when Scripps gave up and sold the Press to Blade Communications of Toledo, Ohio, which swapped them the Herald as partial payment.
