Political office may be losing its allure.

Like trash collecting, working as an elected official is perceived as a dirty, necessary job. If recent elections are any indication, it's also a job an increasing number of people are avoiding. Call them the "would-have-rans"--folks who heard the call to public service and for various reasons, chose to ignore it.
