Exaggerating a resume is nothing new. But even as the technology for checking the background of applicants improves, the likelihood of getting a straight answer diminishes. The reason? A litigious society has in essence terrorized employers into giving the bare minimum of information about past employees. That means while the earnest job hopeful sitting across from you may be a former company VP--or the worst sort of slacker--name and hire dates are all you're likely to get from a previous employer.
