From The Editorial Desk

There is a certain irony at work here. At the same time beer-drinking cigarette smokers have been banished to the cold outdoors, the cigar-and-martini culture is flourishing in Monterey County. While it is considered declass‚, dirty and nasty to smoke cigarettes, it is considered glamorous by many to wrap lips around tobacco-leaf phalluses and suck smoke.

With the AT&T in town, and with cigars being almost as integral a part of golf as putters and ugly pants, Coast Weekly's Kelle Walsh dove into the cigar-and-martini crowd to better understand the causes-and potential consequences-of smoking stogies.

Also in this issue, Richard Pitnick probes the merits of Clint Eastwood's gift to Monterey County. Was the former Carmel mayor-and participant in this week's AT&T-truly being generous, or did he personally receive more benefits than the residents of MoCo from his donation of the Odello Ranch to the county?

If a good cup of coffee is more appealing than a martini, you'll be interested to read our feature story by Michael Sims about the coffeehouse culture, with a list of local coffeehouses. And you'll find the latest breaking charges-legal and otherwise-about the swiftly-becoming-notorious Battle of the Bands in my column, What's Up, Chuck?
