There were times we thought our fingers would fall off and our eyes would go blind but we made it through our ninth-annual Best-Of readers' poll. It's always a daunting project, taking up a big chunk of our time for the two months prior to publication. This year, we tallied nearly 1,200 ballots to determine winners in 170 categories.
We think this year's edition is one of the best we've put together. It was a team effort, involving the entire Coast Weekly staff, as well as a number of freelance contributors, all of whom we'd like to publicly thank. Particularly, we'd like to thank Charles Stanco, a wait person at the Seaside Fishwife, for good-naturedly being our Captain Best-Of.
Every year, it's interesting to watch how the issue reflects our community. By following the winners in certain categories, it's possible to trace the trajectory of a business' rise (and sometimes decline). It's also possible to trace the changing attitudes in MoCo as each year one or two more categories are claimed by chain retailers. Although we approach the issue in a lighthearted manner, it does bear some degree of social significance.
Most of all, we think the issue is a way for CW readers to celebrate their favorite choices in a multitude of categories and we're happy to be a part of that celebration.
Here's a toast to all the The Best of Monterey County.
