Election Day--Ready, Set, Vote
Thursday, May 28, 1998
It''s the same but different. This election day, there is a new way to vote--the open primary--and a wide-open race for governor with no incumbent running for re-election. But campaigning hasn''t changed and there''s a new slug of propositions to wade through. Will you be ready? Will you be there?

Do you plan to vote? Yes.
Who do you like for Governor? Probably Gray [Davis]. He''s caused the least trouble, mudslinging. Other candidates do name calling. Then you don''t know what to believe.
What do you think of the open primary? It''s a good idea. It gives more chances to vote for the person, not the party line.
Which propositions concern you? The bilingual education. I think they need it but it doesn''t always serve them well.
John "Smith"
Resides: Monterey
Occupation: Business Owner
Age: 55
How do you plan to vote? I have a distinct party line.
What do you think of the open primary? I think it''s a healthy thing. It has a narrowing effect on party machinery.
Which propositions concern you? In California, just about every one concerns you.
What about negative advertising? It is a great way to obfuscate positions.

Do you plan to vote? Yes.
Who do you like for Governor? I''m not thrilled with any of them.
Do you like the open primary? I think people already know what they''ll do.
Which propositions concern you? My husband is a teacher. Prop 226 concerns me.
What about negative campaigning? It''s a turn-off and they all seem to do it.
Laurel Lee-Alexander
Resides: Seaside
Occupation: Marketing Director
Age: 35
Will you vote? Yes.
What do you think of the open primary? It''s good. It gives voters the option to vote outside the party if they feel strongly.
Which propositions concern you? I''ve heard 226 will create more work for businesses. It hurts charities. Also, 227 worries me.
What about campaign advertising? People spend too much money, especially for governor. They need to talk about issues, not what''s wrong with others.

Do you plan to vote? No. I don''t care really.
What do you think of the open primary? I don''t know what it is.
What about campaign advertising? I haven''t seen television or newspapers. I''d rather not know.
