Scoring The Conductors

CW's guide to the men--and woman--trying out for the chance to be symphony conductor.

Seven conductors--six men and one woman--from small-to-medium-sized symphonies around the country will one by one, take to the podium this year during the Monterey Symphony''s guest season. Each candidate was given a guest soloist and some main selections to work with and each designed the rest of his or her own program.

One of these contenders could end up being the new music director/conductor of our $1.1 million local symphony. Audience members, musicians, patrons and board members will all have an opportunity to give their input to the search committee making the symphony''s final selection. To help them and inform our readers, CW News Editor Jill Duman and classical music columnist Scott MacClelland went behind the scenes to talk to reviewers, board members and musicians who have worked with each conductor candidate in other parts of the nation. Here''s their handy synopsis of what to consider when you''re scoring the conductors.
