Life Lessons For The Whole Student

These are complicated times to be a student. The booming high-tech economy has made the workplace more competitive than ever, and in response, universities and colleges have become more vocationally oriented, churning out workers to inhabit the cubicles of the corporate world. It used to be that getting an education prepared a student not just for a lifetime of work, but for a life of the mind, for intellectual adventures and involvement in the community.

The Weekly aims to help revive some of that cherished tradition. We know you''re going to be pretty busy dashing from class to class, writing papers and taking tests, but if you have some free time we encourage you to get out of the ivory tower, enlarge your horizons and find out what''s happening in your community. Volunteer and have some fun. Learn to speak a foreign language; read books that aren''t assigned. Get out. Get involved. And get smart.

In this special section, Traci Hukill investigates student activism on the CSUMB campus. Laurel Chesky explores the different ways students can lend a helping hand to the local environment. Vanja Thompson unearths some imaginative volunteer activities, and Rebecca Crocker gives an overview of the region''s rich foreign language learning opportunities. Also included is C. Kevin Smith''s guided tour of Monterey''s second-hand bookstores and a rousing introduction to the Monterey music scene by music columnist Aaron S. Birk. Finally, Chuck Thurman tells aspiring actors how to get their feet wet in community theater.
