It was William Blake who said that "excess leads to the palace of wisdom," but we have to wonder if there is any truth in that. Some people go out and imbibe with total abandon, only to fall face first into the muck. Some do not. Here are some people who know these subjects best--glad we caught ''em early!
Ray Askew
Bar owner, Monterey
Do you think about drinking, smoking and screwing? I think they all go hand in hand.
What kind of people fight against them all? People that don''t have the guts to face the reality of the human spirit.
What is the pro and con of all three? I think the only pro is the freedom to choose what you want to do. The cons--the clap, cancer, and church.
Judy Mullikin
Radio host, Monterey
What do you think of people who live a life of excess? At least they''re living life.
Does excess lead to the palace of wisdom? I don''t know, but there have been a lot of writers and artists who have been alcoholics, heavy smokers, etc.
Well, like who? Have you ever seen that movie Bar Fly? It''s said to be about Charles Bukowski.
Darrell Proffitt
Server, Pacific Grove
Who''s a famous cat you know who drank, smoked and screwed in excess? Larry Flynt, the guy who started Hustler.
Do drinking and smoking play a role in your life? It plays a role in my professional life. Personally, it is not a priority for me.
So there are some pros and cons? The pro, you get some momentary enjoyment. The cons only come into play when you let them take control of your life.
