Memorial Needed

"Vet Project" (11/9-15), the fine article by Rebecca Crocker, hit home. As a veteran of bloody Word War II and frozen Korea, I still see the dead and dying. All of us had the right to live our life out, not to be torn to bits on some stinking island or a place named Viet Nam.
Most Americans--and none of our youth--even know where ''Nam is. Ask 100 and you will get a blank stare. Our city council, most were not born during the killing fields--all they have seen is milk and honey, and big trucks and comfort.
In Salinas, we have a piece of land we all fought for. It is very, very sad, those few white, wooden cross markers. Please, walk up that hill and you will weep.
Let''s march to a different drummer. Let us stand up and be counted and, Salinas City Council, reach for the torch--and let us build our own Viet Nam memorial on that hill. Let''s get the dirt moving, the design complete and the dollars needed.
Build and they will come.

At least they didn''t call in a SWAT team to handle the PG man who was injured by police because he was being a stubborn, noisy nuisance. How sad that a non-violent solution could not be found. If police were not excused so frequently for injuring people, maybe they would be less aggressive.

I just wanted to publicly thank whomever is responsible for supplying the Edward Ricketts'' statue (corner of Wave and Drake) with his daily bouquet of flowers. Whenever I pass by the statue on the bike trail, he has never failed to be holding fresh flowers. I just wanted to let the person (or persons) know that we notice and it definitely makes people smile! Thank you!
