The Grapes of Wrath
As the beginning of the "Steinbeck and Hollywood" film series, the Academy Award-winning classic The Grapes of Wrath commands the big screen, followed by a panel discussion with film critics Richard von Busack, Morton Marcus and Lisa Jensen, and a special tour of the exhibit. Based on John Steinbeck's Nobel Prize-winning novel about an Oklahoma family's travels to California during the Great Depression, Henry Fonda stars as Tom Joad. John Ford won the Best Director Oscar for the 1940 film. The ticket to this screening includes lunch at the Steinbeck Center. Not Rated. At the National Steinbeck Center, 1 Main, Salinas. $12/person. The Last Days
The 1998 Academy Award-winning documentary about five Hungarian Holocaust survivors, The Last Days, is aired at Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday night only. The film, presented by the Shoah Foundation and Steven Spielberg, chronicles the struggle to survive Hitler's final genocidal push near the end of World War II, using eye-witness testimony and rare archival footage. The documentary then follows the five survivors, now all U.S. citizens, back to their hometowns in Hungary more than 50 years after the end of Nazi genocide.
