Back To The Coliseum

Streetalk By Aaron S. Birk

The Romans used to watch people being fed to lions live in vast open-air arenas. These days it seems we''re into the same old thing-real people getting into real trouble before our bewildered eyes. The "Survivor" series, "Temptation Island," and other "Reality TV" shows all cater to a certain type of mindset. These folks took some time to think about it.

What do you think about Real TV? I think it''s unentertaining.

What does Real TV do to real people? I think it builds an archetype for betrayal because people think it''s all right to be like the people are "behind the scenes."

Do you think it will get more violent and graphic? Not yet. Football is still powder-puff, and there are no spiked clubs or blood.

Barista, Salinas

What does Real TV do? It kinda calls things into question when we turn the camera on ourselves.

What Real TV program would you be in? One where it is just my boring, mundane life-and I still get the million dollars at the end.

How does Real TV appeal to people? I haven''t seen all the shows, but it definitely caters to the dark side of people.

Lacey Popichak

Student, Prunedale

Why do people watch Real TV? I think they watch it because they want to see people break out of hard situations.

Do you think it will get more and more graphic? Yes, I think it will definitely get more graphic.

What Real TV show would you be on? I don''t think I could ever be on one.
