Practical Joking

Streetalk.

People who know each other are bound to flip one another some guff now and then. Practical jokes are an American pasttime and are ingrained in our psyche as a way of showing affection. But sometimes a joke is carried too far. Sometimes we believe a "just kidding" will work to calm down an enraged victim, when often enough, the joke really is on them. So to help simmer this topic down, we asked some folks what they thought about joking around.

Gary Russell

Big boss, Pacific Grove
Ever met someone who just couldn''t take a joke? Yeah--all my bosses.

Are jokes simply masked truths? Oh, yes, I''m totally on that. I think they''re a good cover-up.

Why do people take some playful fun seriously? They become embarrassed. They feel stupid. Like with magic: Here it is, there it goes--you''re an idiot.

Kasey Hutchinson

Fashion manager, Seaside
Ever played a joke on someone who flipped out? Yes. One of my best friends went to Santa Catalina. We moved her car and she thought it was stolen.

Was she really mad? Yes, just a little bit.

What do you think about people who flip out like that? They just need to lighten up.

Jenell Sercia

Salesperson, Monterey
Ever play a practical joke? One time I put food coloring in my sister''s shampoo. Turned her hair green. She freaked out.

What do you think about people who freak out? They''re stuffy and stuck up.

When should you take a joke seriously? When the joke is serious and not about you.
