The Graduates

Here''s a little advice for the young people who have just graduated high school: Drinking doesn''t solve or do a damned thing for anybody. This year, many students chose to participate in a sober graduation party that wore on until the wee hours of the morning. Curious about how the teetotaling event went, Street Talk tracked down a few of the revelers.

Graduate, Pacific Grove

Was your last night of high school special? It actually was, yes.

What kind of things did PG High School have at its Sober Grad Night? They had Sumo wrestling and a hypnotist. I was hypnotized into being Nikki Taylor for about 10 minutes.

Really? How did that work? My friends said that when the crowd laughed I would turn into her, and that I was mad when I had to sit down because I wanted to give autographs.

Jesse Padilla

Graduate, Monterey

So how was Sober Grad Night? It was fun. It was a Star Wars theme--it was great.

What kinds of things did you do? Well they had gambling, a DJ, and they raffled off things like Oz Fest tickets.

Would you do it again? No, but I''d recommend it for anyone next year--I''m done with high school.

Elisabeth Donley

Student, Pacific Grove

What year are you going into in high school? I''m going into my sophomore year.

Will you be going to Sober Grad Night? I went this year. Some random person invited me.

What is the most intimate aspect of graduating? I guess you''re starting a new era of your life and leaving behind your safety net.
