Standing here in the Coast Weekly pasture alongside nearly 85,000 of our bovine brothers and sisters, we are pleased to introduce the publication of this year's "Best Of Monterey County Readers' Poll." It's an issue that puts the "cow" back into Moonterey Cownty.

The big news, of course, is the announcement of winners from this year's Readers' Poll. Once again, readers were out in force voting for their favorite places to wine, dine, shop and carouse. We're also excited to be greatly expanding the number of Critics' Picks so that our staff can share with you its own ideas about what makes this the best place to live. And we've included short interviews with some of our readers about why they voted the way they did. Congratulations to all the winners of this year's poll-you are truly what makes Monterey County great.

At the same time, we are deeply saddened to hear of the troubles faced by our British bovine friends who have been stricken with a deadly disease. To honor their struggle, and to show our solidarity with the cows in our own cownty, we have included in this prestigious issue a collection of little-known cow facts and stories. While you enjoy the offerings in this week's paper, we urge you to ask yourself the following question:

If all the cows in Britain are destroyed because of hoof-and-mouth disease, will it be known as "The herd that was shot 'round the world"?
