Steinbeck Busted  The city of Monterey has just unveiled its newest tribute to John Steinbeck: a life-size bronze bust of the Nobel Prize-winning author, perched since Aug. 23 on the third floor of the Monterey Conference Center. Created by Peninsula sculptor Jesse Corsaut, who has spent years on this project, the bust gazes out across Monterey Bay with a slightly quizzical expression, marking, perhaps, the great man''s bemusement at the street, neighborhood and assorted buildings now bearing his name.

Ed Leeper Not Busted

A week before Monterey unveiled Steinbeck, the city''s parks and recreation department penned its approval of three public art projects to be installed at the Windows on the Bay Park by Big Sur artist/activist/vet/rabble rouser Ed Leeper. Each installation goes up and comes down in one day, and all three represent Leeper''s unique style of je ne sais quoi.

The first, to be exhibited today from 8am to 6pm, will be a giant flowerpot constructed from eight-foot-long yellow plastic poles stuck into 20 or 30 upright golf bags placed in a tight circle. The second installation, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 17, will consist of 37 Eisenhower jackets draped around T-shaped sticks representing marching soldiers in platoon formation. The last of the series, going up and down on Wednesday, Oct. 16, involves 30 kindergarten chairs of various colors.

This Saturday Leeper is presenting "31 Aug 65," a performance art piece, at his Gallery Military Police Sub-Station on Palo Colorado Canyon. He says the title refers to the date on which a pregnant Vietnamese woman was killed under mysterious circumstances in a village taken by the First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division, the same division in which Leeper served two years later as a personnel Warrant Officer. Leeper has constructed a soldier, dressed in his own U.S. Army-issue jacket and wearing his medals, including the Purple Heart. At 2pm he will pour blood over the mannequin while standing on a ladder dressed in a woman''s dress, pantyhose and shoes. What''s it mean? Ask Ed. The performance will be photographed and videotaped. Those who wish to watch the bloodletting may call Leeper at 373-0823.
