NEXT-DOOR POETS... Two students from the free weekly poetry workshop run by PG poet-in-residence RYAN MASTERS will read from their works DEC. 28 at 7pm at
BOOKWORKS. It''s the first public reading for both men--
GEORGE DONALD, a translator at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas; and
SEAN SMITH, who works at a gas station and at Recycled Records, and who has already published his own chapbook. "They''re very different poets, but they complement each other well," Masters opines. As part of Masters'' gig for living rent-free in Pacific Grove''s "poetry house," he runs a free weekly workshop for all budding poets in the Little House in Jewell Park, every Wednesday at 6:30pm. He also sponsors a free poetry reading the last Saturday evening of the month at Bookworks and is setting up
WWW.MONTEREYBAYPOETRY.COM, which will be, he says, "a resource for the poetry community from Big Sur to Santa Cruz." The website will list literary events, feature local poets, provide a library of local poetry contacts, will have chat rooms and a bulletin board where people can post their own poetry, as well as links to related sites. Masters hopes the site will be up and running by late May or early June, when he plans to hold the first Monterey Bay Poetry Festival, probably in PG''s Chautauqua Hall. Stay tuned for details. FILM CONTEST DEADLINE...The Dec. 31 deadline has been extended for the MONTEREY COUNTY FILM COMMISSION''s annual SCREENWRITING CONTEST.
Screenplays are now due Jan. 31, and they must be full-length film or TV scripts that have not yet been sold. A $2,003 FIRST PRIZE is at stake, and the top three winners receive personal comments from film industry professionals, plus what contest organizers call "Hollywood exposure and contacts," invaluable if you want to break into the field.
