Marina Plan Criticized

The City of Marina is in the middle of a fiery dispute after details of a massive development were revealed last week. Under plans for the Marina Heights development on the former Fort Ord, some 1,050 homes would be built. Although the city council agreed with Rep. Sam Farr over the summer to require that affordable housing make up 25 percent of new housing projects, the Marina Heights plan falls far short. Under the plan as it''s been proffered, only 85 homes (or eight percent of the new homes) will be available for less than $301,000.

Citizens fired off angry letters to city officials this week. Besides the lack of affordable housing, critics also railed against the lack of public participation in the planning process.

The city council met on October 15 to discuss the matter. The Weekly''s deadline preceded the meeting.
