Gator With A Bite

By Stuart Thornton

Great shows occur when bands feel at home in a particular venue. Santa Cruz''s Gatortail play roadhouse blues that should feel right at home in Ocean Thunder''s rough-around-the-edges atmosphere. "We are trying to do a little Louisiana blues with a touch of Texas swing," says vocalist/guitarist Rick Leachman.

The band plays tunes like "I Got Loaded," a list of all the liquors the singer has been consuming over the past week. Their version of "No Money Down" makes this Chuck Berry song sound like it was done by George Thorogood. The band even has its own theme song, "Gatortail Shake."

Gatortail plays Ocean Thunder, 214 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey, Saturday at 9pm. No cover. Call 643-9169.
