Feel the Groove
TONY LINDSAY Tony Lindsay is not a man resting on his laurels. He's a hardworking musician who, despite having sung in Carlos Santana's band, still endeavors to make his own brand and style of music both as a solo performer and by working with a variety of artists, including Tevin Campbell, Steve Winwood and Aretha Franklin. (See story pg. 36). [KF]
9pm. Sly Mc Fly's, 700 Cannery Row, Monterey. Cover charge. 649-8050.

Animal-Friendly Big Top
CIRCUS CHIMERA It bills itself as the "circus of the future." And it's a future without lion tamers and elephant poop. There are no animals--or animal-rights protesters--at this show. An eclectic collection of clowns, trapeze artists, jugglers and tumblers weave together theatrics, choreography and traditional circus performances to an original score. Ticket sales benefit Habitat for Humanity Monterey County, a group that works with community volunteers and needy families to build homes for local families who live in substandard housing. Families contribute sweat equity and pay a zero-percent mortgage that provides seed money for additional homes. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, step right up and enjoy the fun, through Sunday. A Mighty Wind
MARINA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF THE WINDS You've seen them, those nylon-clad daredevils who soar and glide through the air off Highway 1 near Marina. Onshore winds at Marina State Beach make for excellent hang-gliding and paragliding and this weekend is the big wind party. All day Saturday and Sunday, watch landing competitions, races and demonstrations by hang-gliders and paragliders. There will be both competitive wind events to observe and activities for the kids. [AS]
10am-6pm both days. At Marina State Beach and Glorya Jean Tate Park, a short walk away. Free. 595-7516.
Oaren't You Ready to Row?
PADDLEFEST It's athletic fun with a conscience when Monterey Bay Kayaks and TeamOCEAN get together to put on Paddlefest 2003 in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Demonstrations will be given by more than 100 different kayaks from six different manufacturers, and a slide show will show the history and significance of the Marine Sanctuary for Monterey and the rest of the world. But what's most important is how both groups promote harmonious coexistence with the wildlife in the Sanctuary, while still allowing kayakers to have a great time enjoying the beauty of the area. [KF]
6:30pm. Monterey Bay Kayaks, 693 Del Monte Ave., Monterey. $20. 373-5357.

Heavenly Voices
MOUNT MADONNA CHOIR Begun 21 years ago as the musical arm of the Mount Madonna Center--a retreat for yoga, etc., in the Santa Cruz mountains--the Choir draws from 1,000 years of musical history ("from Baroque to Barbershop"), tending toward sacred uplift. Founder and director Josh Gitomer treats the group like a circle of dear friends, and the resulting harmonies seem to evince that love. There is no lack of rigor, however: practically every show is a sellout ending in a standing ovation and rave reviews. [AG]
8pm. United Methodist Church, Sunset and 17 Mile Drive, Pacific Grove. $15/general, $12/children and seniors. 648-0508.

Happy Birthday to Ed
DOC RICKETTS BIRTHDAY PARTY Ed "Doc" Ricketts used to hold mighty wild parties in his Pacific Biological Laboratories on Cannery Row, back in the day when Flora had her bordello across the street and the canneries were hopping. Kalisa Moore carries on the tradition with her annual Ed Ricketts birthday parties, held every May 14 in her La Ida Cafe, the site of Flora's former cathouse. Everyone's invited, and the fun goes on until the lights go out--and then some (see story pg. 22). [SF]
7pm party begins. La Ida Cafe, 851 Cannery Row, Monterey. Free admission; food and drink from the menu. 644-9316.
