Linda and David Shake love light. In fact, they''ve made it their personal mission to let the light shine into as many Pebble Beach homes as possible. The couple has just put the finishing touches on the sixth Pebble Beach home that they have bought, remodeled, then put on the market.

"Sea Mist," their latest, is so bright and sunny that Linda has to wear sunglasses to watch TV. But when they flip through photos of what the house looked like five years ago, it was quite the opposite.

The front yard was dirt. Dark wood closed in the ceilings of the living areas, painted yellow plywood covered the floors, and an old red woodstove heated the family room. Narrow hallways and low celings added to the "claustrophobic feeling."

"When my parents came to visit, they said, ''it''s interesting,''" Linda laughs.

Even with all the challenges, the Shakes saw potential in a solid construction and great location.

"What sold us was the front room," David says, showing the formal dining and living areas that look out over 17-Mile Drive.

The couple took out "ugly windows" and put in window seats, raised ceilings, painted light walls and put in skylights. Stone walls and flowers replace dirt.

In the back of the house, a huge gourmet kitchen with a granite-topped bar opens up into a family room with an eating area, then leads gracefully to the outdoor patio. Linda explains that she chose the same flooring colors in the family room and kitchen as the patio so that the transtion between the indoors and the outdoors would be seamless.

"We put sandstone on the patio so that the inside feels like an extension of the outdoors," she says.

The couple used a rare flooring surface in the kitchen area, Chinese quartzite slate, that has multi-colored accents in the sandy background so it will work with any color decor. Linda painted trompe l''oeil flowers and vines over the kitchen cabinets and on the family room walls.

The indoor-outdoor garden theme carries through the house. Fresh cut yellow daffodils rest in a glass vase mounted on the living room wall, silk flowers are draped over mirrors in the bathroom, and windows look out to the elegant landscaping outside.

Three generously sized bedrooms each have their own large bathrooms, two with jetted tubs. In addition, there is a powder room with delicate floral accents off the kitchen area.

In most of the rooms, the peaceful sound of trickling water comes in from the backyard waterfall. Next to the waterfall, a wood-burning pizza oven makes backyard entertaining complete.

"The other night I made prime rib and rosemary garlic potatoes in it," Linda says.

Linda says that the pizza oven, barbecue, and kitchen areas all work in harmony for cooking the perfect meal.

"It just flows between all the areas," she says.

But now that the remodel of their house is a success ("it just takes some imagination," David says), the couple is ready for their next project.

"Each one gets better," Linda says. "There is nothing left to do on this one. We need a new canvas to work on. We are feeling a little stifled with nothing to do."
