Still Underground

E-40 keeps keepin' it real.

On E-40''s latest release, Breakin'' News, the Bay Area rapper shows why he is still an underground legend after almost 10 years in the game. On the album''s title track, Forty raps about sippin'' St Ides, losing weight, and Clarence Carter without sounding like a ranting lunatic. "Show & Prove" highlights Forty''s unique wordplay with zingers like "You make my life complete/ you got my back like my car seat."

The album also features a handful of appearances by rappers from the "Dirty South," one of the places where Forty''s music is the most popular. "Quarterbackin''" features Clipse, the proteges of superproducers The Neptunes, while "Anybody Can Get It" has up-and-coming southerners Lil'' Jon & The Eastside Boyz, Bone Crusher and David Banner barking into the mic.

With seven albums under his belt, Breakin'' News might not be the album where Forty breaks into the mainstream. Nonetheless, Forty''s performance at Planet Gemini is a chance to see one of underground rap music''s living legends up close and personal.

E-40 performs at Planet Gemini, 625 Cannery Row in Monterey, on Thursday night at midnight. $30. 373-1449.
