Episodic

Underage rock band finds a venue.

With the recent closure of Prunedale’s Jim Dandy’s, there are few places where a group like Episodic can perform. The group, which plays dark rock in the same vein as Tool and A Perfect Circle, has found that it is hard to bring its music to the masses with three under-aged band members.

Luckily for them, one local club is hosting under-aged bands for an under-aged crowd. “Right now, Chippers is really the only all-ages place,” says drummer Nick Patella. (Full disclosure: Patella also writes the Weekly’s StreetTalk column.)

A few weeks ago, Episodic played its first show at Chippers with local rockers InBalance, Victim of Circumstance and Ashton. According to Patella, the band impressed. “For a first gig, everyone was really surprised,” he says. Now, the band is preparing to play its first show at the Lava Lounge, but Lava Lounge’s Paul Hastey says that the band has to keep to the stage, and can’t linger after the show.

So what about all of the under-aged Episodic fans who want to see their friends’ performance?

“They can hang out on the street and hear it just fine,” Hastey says.

Episodic will be playing with Prunedale’s Plaster Friday at 10pm in the Lava Lounge, 321 Alvarado St., Monterey. free. 646-9244.
