Give War a Chance
You recently carried an article on a group espousing peace for the world, and educating young men on ways to avoid military service [“Study War No More,” July 1-7]. That should do it!
One current definition of a “liberal” is someone who will not fight back when attacked. One wonders whether these people realize that all of us have been attacked by enemies who want to kill us and our children. We did not react to the previous attacks during the past few years and the bad guys did not become peaceful. On the contrary they felt we were weak, especially after we departed Somalia. If you really want peace, support a strong military.

Give Mountain Lions a Chance
I am very angry that Monterey County, Fish and Game, and State Parks are coming up with their usual ignorant solution—to kill the mountain lion feeding on deer at Asilomar [“Beach Cat Appears Doomed,” July 8-14]. It has attacked no people.
F & G and State Parks claim the Pacific Grove Police made this decision with them; however, I spoke at length with the Chief and he says relocation is fine with him. He even suggested that a technological solution would be good as in some type of aversion that would make lions want to stay clear. It is so great that some are coming up with solutions other than the usual primitive one.
Thank you Bob Turner and others who are trying to stop the ecocide of California and the earth. Please help save our magnificent big cats.

Weekly Classifieds Are Safe
Thank you Monterey County Weekly from a long-time reader, first time letter-writer. I read about the man who fell for the Nigerian scam [“SpamScam,” April 29-May 5]. It might have saved us a bundle.
My boyfriend placed an ad for his boat online and received a letter from a man in the UK who offered him $6,500 more than the price of the boat. The check was coming from a “friend in the USA who owes him money.” He said to take $350 extra for our troubles and refund the difference by Western Union after the check clears.
I checked on Snopes.com, the urban legend site. I was informed that this is the newest angle of the Nigerian Scam. The check appears to clear, then you send back the extra money. A week or so later, the bank finds the check is fraudulent and you are out all the money! In the future, we will stay with local ads like with the Weekly. Thanks again.

Moore Missed the Big Story
Michael Moore uses the 9/11 story for anti-Bush, anti-war preaching. He failed to follow up on his own questions in his Hey Dude [Where’s my Country?] about curious discrepancies in the official version of the events.
ABC and others reported that the passport of a hijacker was found on a pile of rubble next to the World Trade Center. Recalling the huge fireball and pursuant total destruction of the buildings, it is impossible to believe that this passport survived and was not ‘planted evidence.’ Who would want to plant evidence in this case and why?
FBI director Mueller acknowledged that some hijackers had fake identifications. BBC and US papers reported that five alleged hijack suspects turned up alive in Europe and other parts of the world within days after 9/11. Moore should have used David Ray Griffin’s carefully researched book The New Pearl Harbor as a script for a REAL documentary.
