Street Talk

The Microsoft of Beans?: Asked at Cherry Bean Coffeehouse in Salinas.

Q: Is Starbucks monopolizing the coffee industry and/or homogenizing our society?
Follow-up: What corporate chain would you not mind seeing go out of business?

Rick Stiff
Restaurant Manager | Salinas
A: Neither. There’s just a lot of competition out there and Starbucks is trying to compete like any other type of business.
Slammed: Denny’s. Their service sucks.

Marianne Faulkner
Student | Salinas
A: People try to be individuals but end up homogenized anyway. Starbucks’ customers don’t care what Starbucks’ is doing.
Not Lovin’ It: McDonald’s.

Pete Empson
Cherry Bean Owner | Aptos
A: Starbucks is both good and bad. They’ve enlightened us about coffee and brought it to the masses, which in a way has helped all coffee shops.
Help the Little Guy: I wish people as a whole would dump the corporate mentality.
