Americana Beauty

Holiday and the Adventure Pop Collective.

Nominated as Best Americana act for this year’s upcoming San Diego Music Awards, Holiday and the Adventure Pop Collective have been prolific since songwriters Derric Oliver and Louis Caverly formed the group in 2002. With one full-length CD and three EPs already under their belt, the San Diego duo just released another full-length work titled Become.

Though the music oftentimes veers into breezy country pop territory, the presence of unexpected instrumentation keeps the band from becoming a rote exercise. “Out on a Limb” sounds like an anonymous acoustic pop song until a woozy steel guitar comes in on the chorus, while “40 Years” is a country rock number made interesting by the presence of a trumpet.

In addition to an eclectic batch of originals, the group has a wide range of songs by other artists in their repertoire, including tunes by country legend Merle Haggard and British ‘80s act The Smiths.

Holiday and the Adventure Pop Collective play Fernwood, Highway 1, 24 miles south of Carmel, Big Sur, Saturday at 9pm. No cover. 667-2422.
