On Her Own
Carla Blackwell goes all the way off the hook.
Thursday, January 20, 2005
Since she was 14 years old, San Jose native Carla Blackwell has been performing music in public. The vocalist sang R&B and pop numbers with the early ‘90s group Attraction, and currently, Blackwell sings for the jazzy/poppy outfit Off the Hook and the old school/R&B band TYT. But, this Friday, the 33 year-old singer is striking out on her own.
“I think this new project is going to be more me,” she says. “I wanted to sing more music representative of my age.”
That means that Blackwell will toss in songs by Joss Stone and Madonna alongside classics by Aretha Franklin and Barry White.
Carla Blackwell plays Sly McFly’s, 700 Cannery Row, Monterey, Friday at 9pm. 649-8050.
