Final Judgment: Asked outside the Salinas Superior Courthouse

Q: Does any crime warrant the death penalty?
Follow-up: What annoyance crime committed by teenagers is worthy of a death sentence?

Tonie Johns
Deputy Tax Collector | Salinas
A: My Christian belief is that no man has the right to take a life, even if it’s someone who’s perpetrated a crime. Though they shouldn’t die, there should be very strict punishments.
Fresh Ideas: They think they know everything.

Nancy Keough
Attorney | Pebble Beach
A: No, it’s just as morally wrong for the state to kill as it is for an individual.
Gone Deaf: Having the car stereo turned up to about 50 decibels.

Rick Anderson

Real Estate | Pebble Beach
A: Yes. It’s a just punishment. I think it should be used more widely. Even teenagers understand right and wrong and there is a certain degree of murder that justifies the death penalty.
Click Clack: The clatter of skateboards.
