Secret Garden

Big Sur freak-folk fest commences at 4:20pm Friday.

Nabob Shineywater has an impressive way of discovering bands that will later be featured in ultra-hip places like Arthur magazines or Pitchfork.com. At his Quiet Quiet festivals, which originated in Bolinas and moved to Big Sur this past January, Shineywater, a member of the Matador Records act Brightblack Morning Light, has introduced some concertgoers to acts like Devendra Banhart, Vetiver and Joanna Newsom, who have become household names in hip dwellings.

This summer’s event, Quiet Quiet Forest Spectrum, features more of this.

Kicking off the eight-hour festival will be one of its most eclectic acts, SUNROOF!, a vehicle for experimental noise rock guitarist Matthew Bower, who makes musical collages that can sound like a laser showdown in a sci-fi flick or guitar-induced sound effects over a buried drumbeat. Sunroof! plays from 4:20pm to 5pm.

GRASS is a freak-folk supergroup made up of members of neo-psychedelic folkies Espers, the John Fahey-influenced Currituck Co., and Feathers, who have been garnering acclaim for the “let’s sing around the campfire” sound of their recent self-titled CD. Grass plays 5:20pm to 6pm.

An Andean folkloric group might look like the odd band out, but the Arcata, Calif.-based HUAYLLIPACHA will probably go well with the rest of the evening’s offerings. On their song, “Mujeres y Niños,” the band detours from intricate guitar work with flute to other ambient, almost psychedelic sections. Huayllipacha plays 8pm to 9:30pm.

Shineywater’s own band, BRIGHTBLACK MORNING LIGHT, is sure to put on one of the evening’s best and most hypnotic performances. The group’s self-titled debut is one of the strongest releases of the summer: a slow boil of icy keyboards, gospel singers and molasses funk grooves. Brightblack Morning Light plays from 10pm to 10:45pm.

LAVENDER DIAMOND is the group most likely to blow up after this installment of the Quiet Quiet festival. Led by vocalist Becky Stark, Lavender Diamond hasn’t even released a full-length album yet but their EP Cavalry of Light has hints of greatness. The four-song CD features the beautiful driving pop of “You Broke My Heart” and “Rise in the Springtime,” which has Stark’s whispered vocals over ornate chamber music. Lavender Diamond plays from 11:10pm to 12:45am.

Experimental. That would be the best way to describe DANIEL ARCUS INCUS ULULAT HIGGS’ set of semi-sculpted feedback at this January’s Quiet Quiet event in Big Sur. The former vocalist of early emo group Lungfish, Higgs has been known to play improvisations on the Jew’s harp during some performances. Higgs plays from 12:15am to 12:45am.

QUIET QUIET FOREST SPECTRUM will take place at the Henry Miller Library, 28 miles south of Carmel on Highway 1 in Big Sur, this Friday from 4:20pm to 12:45am. $25. 667-2574.
