Marshmallow World and Other Holiday Favorites

Raul Malo has carved out a musical niche, conquering every genre from country western with his former band the Mavericks to jazz with this year’s After Hours. With the release of his latest project, Marshmallow World and Other Holiday Favorites, Malo proves that his pipes can polish up any old holiday song and turn it into something special.

The title track is a playful take on the Dean Martin version of “Marshmallow World.” Not as well known as some of the other tracks, it is a perfect entry into the whimsical feel of the album. It’s followed by “A Not So Merry Christmas,” which evokes a Beach Boys vibe. The album also has standard Christmas classics done in fresh ways like a swing-style “Jingle Bells” and “Walking In a Winter Wonderland” done completely in whistle-form accompanied solely by a ukelele. And, of course, no Christmas album would be complete without “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” which Malo does in a smooth, crooner style.
