The Tom Ayres Experience

Local guitar virtuoso pays tribute to Hendrix’s legendary Monterey Pop performance.

One morning when he was 8 years old, Tom Ayres woke up and saw people camping all over Monterey. Later, he and his older brother drove by the Fairgrounds, where they could hear The Animals playing “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” at the Monterey International Pop Festival.

Six years later, Ayers saw Jimi Hendrix’s performance from that day in the film >>Monterey Pop. “That started my Hendrix love affair,” Ayres says.

Ayres went on to become a mind-blowing guitarist himself, playing in a series of local bands over the years, and has recently found success with the San Francisco-based Persephone’s Bees.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hendrix’s legendary performance, Ayers is putting on a tribute show this weekend. While his take on “Are You Experienced?” is a funky departure from the original, there is one aspect of Hendrix’s live shows that Ayres is adhering to. “It’s gonna be loud,” he says, “because that was what Hendrix was about.”

TOM AYRES performs a tribute to Jimi Hendrix at 9pm Saturday, June 16, at Monterey Live, 414 Alvarado St., Monterey. $10. 646-1415.
