ELVIS COSTELLO
ELVIS COSTELLO | My Aim Is True (Deluxe Edition) | Hip-O
Thursday, November 15, 2007
The endless repackaging of old music continues at a furious pace. Few figures from the punk era have benefited from the push to recycle as much as the prolific Elvis Costello, whose albums have been issued and reissued again on CD, always with more bonus tracks.
The latest installment is a deluxe edition of his first LP, My Aim is True. Although Costello had already found his venomous voice as a songwriter, it seemed that he had yet to find his stride in the studio. Much of My Aim bore a sonic resemblance to the era’s FM radio fodder. Outtakes from the sessions are revealing, sharper and more focused than what ended up on the original album. Of less consequence are an additional handful of early demos, just Costello accompanying himself on electric guitar. The package also includes a second disc of live recordings with The Attractions from the time of My Aim is True, revealing a band that had already achieved a distinctive and vital sound.
